Food or Fuel?

Illinois Plant Produces Alternate Fuel

A common objection to biomass energy production is that it could divert agricultural production away from food crops in a hungry world -- even leading to mass starvation in the poor countries.

True or not?

Not true: at best it's an oversimplification of a complex issue. It just doesn't work that way, and neither does hunger. more

Understanding Oil Prices...more

Oil prices are a confusing subject for most consumers. At times, the prices seem to go up or down for no particular reason. The explanation for this is simple: the supply and demand of petroleum is always changing based on a variety of factors. In this story, we'll try to quickly explain how the market works and how it affects gas prices.

Kick the Oil Habit

Hooked on Oil

While domestic oil production peaked in the 1970s, consumption continues to grow at break-neck speed. In 2025 the U.S. is projected to consume 28.3 million barrels a day -- 44 percent more oil than we do today, with domestic production meeting a mere 30 percent of that need. aoilpolicy2

America spends more than $200,000 per minute on foreign oil -- $13 million per hour. More than $25 billion a year goes for Persian Gulf imports alone. This NRDC analysis considers oil demand and supply projections and how our current policy of oil dependence effects our economy and security.

Ethanol can stretch fossil fuels

There continues to be a great amount of news debating ethanol's energy balance. It is becoming clear that big oil is investing millions to discredit ethanol so they can sway public opinion and influence public policy to stop biofuels mandates. Last week Business week broke a story disclosing how oil companies are actually funding third parties to issue skewed negative ethanol research and news stories in an effort to stop biofuels before it impacts their treasured fuels market. more

Corn Ethanol is Reducing Gasoline Price

Merrill Lynch head of global commodity research, Francisco Blanch, in a recent energy report explains “ethanol is easing energy bottlenecks”.  Blanch figures that oil prices would be at least 15% higher than they are, if not for today's output of ethanol.  Today ethanol is adding about 8.5 billion gallons of capacity or about 6% to the fuel stream.  A 15% reduction of price equates to 50 cents/gallon to consumers at the pump!  The U.S. uses about 142 billion gallons of gasoline so the total savings to American consumers is $71 billion dollars annually.  If you wonder why big oil and middle eastern oil interest are conducting a smear campaign on ethanol I believe $71 billion dollars is the logical answer!
